Weekend Dish – 6/16

Weekend Dish is a place for me to get a little more personal! If you just come to Sunny Side Up for the food, feel free to skip this post but be sure to check back next week for new food photos and recipes!

In a way today was Jesse’s first Father’s day! We celebrated by having a cookout with both of our dads and my grandpa. We had a great time and I even got back in the kitchen a little bit. Unfortunately, my camera battery died and we cannot find the battery charger ANYWHERE! Which means it is in one of our Uhaul boxes. In one of the hundreds (slight exaggeration) of boxes. I have a feeling I am going to need to just buy a new one if I want to take pictures anytime soon. Hopefully I don’t get too out of practice. 🙂 And luckily I still have some photos in my computer archive.

Speaking of archives, I actually managed to sneak in a blog post this week. I didn’t promote it on Facebook (or anywhere really) so if you missed it, here it is!

Blog Recap –

tortillas Homemade Flour Tortillas – Just try them! You’ll be blown away and never want to go back to store bought again! Don’t be intimidated. They actually come together very quickly and you can make a big batch and keep them frozen, so they are still grab and go for easy weeknight dinners!

Pregnancy Update –

So, without even realizing it, I have surpassed the 100 day mark!! Eeekkk! Actually I passed it a few weeks ago, I’m down to 80 days now. I can’t believe it. It seems like just yesterday I was looking at a ticker and reading “200 days until baby is due”. And now here we are, in the double digits! She is on her way and there is no slowing down time now. I think the best comparison I can give right now is from my wedding planning days. We picked the date almost a year in advance and I remember it felt like the actual day would never come. Then, just like a roller coaster, that slow climbing cart started whizzing down hill! I’m definitely feeling like we are in the down hill whizzing stage.

Other than the whole living in limbo while we work out job locations, we are actually feeling pretty well prepared. We both have cars eats. We have the Pack n’ Play. We have clothes, toys, and other baby gear galore. I’m even starting to build up a nice cloth diaper collection (thank you, surprise Target sale!). Although we need her to stay in there and bake a while longer, she is the next big piece of the puzzle (well that and a new place to call home ;))!

My week through Instagram –

First there was pouring rain.

And then the sun came out.

Saturday we went boating with Jesse’s parents, his sister, and their dog. At one point everyone was in the water so the pup and I held down the boat.

My cousin called me to let me know that one of the local Target’s had Charlie Banana cloth diapers on clearance for more than 50% off. Jesse and I ran up there and grabbed a bunch. In total we got 10 diapers for just a little over $80. We went to another local Target and they were not on sale. We compared the prices and we saved over $100!! Woohoo for surprise sales!

That’s a wrap! Thank you so much for stopping by and reading. Have a great week and be sure to check back later in the week for a new recipe!

Weekend Dish 6/9/2013

Weekend Dish is a place for me to get a little more personal! If you just come to Sunny Side Up for the food, feel free to skip this post but be sure to check back next week for new food photos and recipes!

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend! We were happy to be able to spend Saturday evening with my BFF and her husband. That is one major perk of being home. I am realizing now just how much I missed my friends and family!

One thing that the I missing right now is cooking. I do have access to a kitchen at my in-laws, but it’s just not the same as your own kitchen with your own supplies/ingredients/tools. I did make slightly varied version of my Roasted Vegetable Pasta Salad for our get together on Saturday night and it was a huge hit! I used tortellinis instead of bow ties and the dressing base was balsamic vinegar. Yum!

IMG_8481Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies with Chocolate Chips – These tasty little cookies were just what I was looking for one Friday night when I was bit by the baking bug and a sweet tooth! I loved the added texture from the oatmeal, and it made them feel just a teensy bit healthier than regular cookies. 🙂

Pregnancy Update –

With all the craziness of moving we seriously slacked on belly pics the last few weeks. We finally thought to snap one while we were taking a walk around a park. It’s crazy to watch this slow but steady growth.

Another cool thing is that she is getting really active. You can actually see a lot of her movements from the outside now. She can still be kind of stubborn about showing off her kicks for other people though. I swear she can be bouncing off the walls and the minute someone else puts their hand on my belly she just stops. How does she know?! Little stinker. 🙂

My week through Instagram –

One night the baby was just begging me for some Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chip ice cream. If you’ve never had Graeter’s ice cream you’re seriously missing out. This stuff is out of this world. It’s a local Cincinnati company but many, many grocers around the country now stock their ice cream. You won’t be disappointed if you give it a try!

On Monday our cars finally arrived! Rather than driving them back ourselves (which did not sound like fun at 7 months pregnant) we opted to use a transport company. They picked our cars up from our house and dropped them off to us a little less than a week later. It was on the expensive side but I’ve decided it was totally worth it. Only downside was how FILTHY dirty they were. Covered in 2,000 miles of road dirt, diesel exhaust, and rainy weather. Luckily all it took was a good scrub down to get them sparkling again.

So this is really not a great photo of me, but how adorable is my kitty cuddling my bump?? She loves her baby sister already. 🙂

That’s a wrap! Thank you so much for stopping by and reading. Have a great week and be sure to check back later in the week for a new recipe!

Weekend Dish 6/2

Weekend Dish is a place for me to get a little more personal! If you just come to Sunny Side Up for the food, feel free to skip this post but be sure to check back next week for new food photos and recipes!

First, and most importantly, sorry for the blog static lately. I hate going so long between posts, unfortunately, life has been all sorts of crazy lately. So here is what is going on –

When Jesse and I first found out that we were expecting we had sort of tossed around the idea that it would be nice to move back closer to family and friends. As much as we love San Diego, we knew that eventually we would want our little girl to be able to spend time with her grandparents, and aunts, and great grandparents, and great aunts and uncles. Then, “eventually” came sooner than we expected. There was downsizing at Jesse’s company. Although we were both shocked and saddened by the news, we also felt that this must be fate. Everything happens for a reason. (At least that’s what we’re hoping!)

At first our plan was to stay in San Diego for a little while. Then with me getting further along into the pregnancy and us having a trip already planned to visit, we decided if we were going to do it, now was the time. So within 2 weeks we made the decision to move to back to Ohio, packed up our apartment (all by ourselves as pretty much all of our friends were out of town!!), arranged for new leasers for our apartment, made plans for our cars, cats, and stuff, and moved. Needless to say, it’s been CRAZY!!

So that’s that. We are now in Ohio and thankful to have the whole moving madness behind us (though we will need to move and unpack once our Uboxes arrive).

In pregnancy related news, my mom, sister, best friend, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law threw an absolutely gorgeous baby shower for me today! I was completely overwhelmed with the generosity and love my family and friends showered me with. Seriously. Overwhelmed and blessed and just grateful. Big huge thank you to everyone that was a part of our special day.

If you made it through all of that you should really treat yourself to a cookie! As promised on Facebook, I will return to posting food and food photos! I have several things lined up for the coming weeks. Thank you for hanging in there with me!

First, Happy Mother’s day! I wish I were in Ohio celebrating with my own mom, but I am so thankful for modern communication allowing us to to chat on the phone and text throughout the day. To the rest of the mom’s out there, hope you’ve had a great day so far. Thank you for all that you do as a mom!

Blog Recap –

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Cupcakes  – I made these for my good friend Krystal’s virtual baby shower. They are so, so delicious and rich.

Creamy Taco Mac – This is a dish I’ve been making for a long time and I was finally able to get a blog-worthy photo. It’s like a  homemade Hamburger Helper. Easy, delicious, and not terribly bad for you.

Pregnancy Update –

I took this photo (another super bathroom self-pic) on Wednesday when I was officially 23 weeks. I don’t feel like I grew much this past week, but I do notice that I struggle to do weird things now. Getting off the couch or out of bed is just a little more difficult than it used to be!

I thought it might be fun to start using this space to answer some of those cheesy pregnancy journal questions.

How far along? 23 weeks

Baby’s size (in fruit)? Grapefruit

Cravings? Lemonade (a first trimester craving coming back full force) and cookie dough (I’m thinking about making an egg free batch tonight to finally indulge!)

Movement? Lots of flips and turns. She went through a phase where she really liked to kick my belly button.

Looking forward to? I’m really looking forward to traveling back to Ohio in a few weeks for my baby shower!

My week through Instagram –

I can’t go a week without sharing a photo of my sweet cats. The other day I walked in on them both passed out on the (unmade) bed. Cat life is tough, but someone’s got to do it.

Our sweet baby girl is already so lucky and loved. She got her first package in the mail! The start of what I am sure will be a nice little collection of pink. Thanks to my mother-in-law for the sweet package!

I’ve been pretty diligent about making a meal plan and sticking to it for the last several weeks, but for some reason Fridays are hard. This Friday I was having major Chinese food cravings. Specifically the green beans that I loved so much when we lived there. We went to a new restaurant and they had them on the menu! Unfortunately they were AS good as the real deal in China, but they were close enough!

Remember last week when I said when went to Sunset Cliffs? We really wanted to get down to the tide pools but we couldn’t find an easy way down. After talking to some coworkers, Jesse figured out where the stairs were so we went back again yesterday. It was amazing down there. My baby bump fit in perfectly amongst the round bumpy rocks. 🙂

Things I’m loving –

(This is an Amazon affiliate link)

Angelsounds Fetal Heart Doppler – Around week 12 I got really nervous one day and ordered a prenatal home doppler online. I try not to use it compulsively but it’s nice to be able to get a quick listen. It’s also awesome because you can hook it up to your computer and record the heartbeat. We listened and recorded last night and sent the audio to our moms this morning for mother’s day. It’s amazing.

Camelbak Waterbottles – Sometimes I struggle with keeping myself hydrated. I just don’t think about filling up a glass of water. With one of these water bottles it’s so much easier. It holds 32 ounces and I just do my best to finish one or two a day, on top of whatever I drink with meals. I like this particular water bottle because it’s easy to carry and has the retractable mouthpiece.

Game of Thrones – Do you watch this show?? I loooove it. It’s crazy and weird and dramatic and entertaining.

That’s a wrap! Thank you so much for stopping by and reading. Have a great weekend and be sure to check back later this week, I’ll be sharing the recipe for the first batch of ice cream I made this season. Yum!
